The People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights has unveiled a damning report on mica production to coincide with World Day against Child Labor, exposing the widespread use of children to man India’s mica mines, according to a report published by Asia News.
“[Child labor is] one of the most heinous human rights violations. It has a direct negative impact on children’s life, health and education,” Lenin Raghuvanshi, Executive Director of the People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights, told Asia News.
Mica is used to produce a sparkling effect in cosmetics. The report includes a series of photographs shot by Dehli-based Ravi Mishra of children working in mines throughout Bihar and Jharkhand.
India accounts for up to 60 percent of global mica production and it’s thought that up to 20,000 children work in the mines, many of them illegal and unregulated.
