On 18 May 2007, Lenin Raghuvanshi was honoured with the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights, in recognition of his longstanding work for the dignity, equality and rights of marginalized communities, particularly Dalits and children facing exploitation.
At just 37, Lenin’s journey had already included founding and building movements and institutions dedicated to protecting children, challenging caste-based discrimination, combating forced labour and bringing the voices of marginalized communities to national and international forums.
The award also recognised a distinctive approach to human rights: putting people and their dignity at the centre of the struggle.
As AsiaNews reported on 7 May 2007, Lenin described the honour as a privilege and spoke of his inspiration from fellow human rights defender Irom Sharmila.
This milestone remains an important part of the continuing journey for human dignity, social justice and equality.
