Leonardo Verzaro: An Anthropologist’s Journey into Transformation and Humanity

๐ŸŒ✨ Leonardo Verzaro: An Anthropologist’s Journey into Transformation and Humanity ✨๐ŸŒ

From the lens of Leonardo Verzaro, a passionate anthropologist from Italy, comes a powerful exploration of resilience, transformation, and the role of storytelling in humanitarian action. His fieldwork in Varanasi, India, from October to December 2023, sheds light on the intersection of personal pain and collective action.

Leonardo’s immersive study focused on the Dalit community, documenting their stories of suffering, particularly police brutality and social exclusion. Through these poignant narratives, he witnessed how storytelling can heal, empower, and catalyze societal change.

At the heart of his research is Lenin Raghuvanshi, founder of PVCHR, whose life and work exemplify “resistant vitality.” Lenin’s journey, from overcoming adversity to becoming an advocate for human rights, serves as a testament to the transformative power of activism.

๐Ÿ“š Leonardo’s Thesis: "Constructions and Transformations of the Self in Varanasi: Ethnography of a Humanitarian Experience" (2023) is a deep dive into how the Dalit community's pain, when shared, can drive empathy, change, and collective action.

๐Ÿ“ธ Leonardo’s Reflection: He shared a heartwarming post on Facebook with the title “Fresh Doctor in Anthropology, yo!! ๐ŸคŸ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐ŸŽ†๐ŸŽ‡,” capturing the joy of completing his thesis and his deep bond with family. He also expressed his gratitude to Lenin for inspiring his research and for being a friend and guide throughout this journey.

This is just the beginning of a remarkable academic career that blends scholarly rigor with compassion, all while amplifying the voices of the marginalized.

No permanent chairpersons, missing officials: Human rights in limbo in 50% of India’s commissions

Lenin Raghuvanshi, human rights activist and founding member of PVCHR, told Newslaundry that not having permanent chairpersons was a reflection of the state’s priorities. “Human rights are not on the agenda of many state governments, so they don’t prioritise appointing chairpersons,” he said. “Labour laws and rights of the poor and marginalised get compromised because of this. The system in state commissions is also very opaque, and it is almost impossible to get to know about the cases pending before the court.”

“Human rights violations as well as awareness of rights are increasing, so people are filing more cases. But without a full strength in commission, the burden increases on the remaining members,” he said. “Human rights commissions work as courts of the poor and can provide immediate relief to those in need of justice.”

An Evening of Creative Convergence in Varanasi: Exploring Art, Culture, and Humanity

An Evening of Creative Convergence in Varanasi: Exploring Art, Culture, and Humanity ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŽจ

On December 3, 2024, Varanasi became the stage for a profound gathering of artistic minds and cultural visionaries. Hosted by the renowned artist and Fulbright scholar Chawky Frenn, this evening brought together a diverse group of individuals, including theatre legend Parnab Mukherjee and Ayurvedic practitioner Dr. Ashutosh Singh, for a discussion on creativity, culture, and humanity.

The evening, which unfolded at Roma’s Cafรฉ Diner, was not just about sharing a meal, but about exploring art, activism, and ancient wisdom in the heart of one of India’s most spiritual cities. Together, the participants delved into profound topics, from the legacy of Mirza Ghalib to the power of art to challenge injustice and inspire change.

One of the evening's highlights was the discussion on the connection between Ghalib’s vision of Varanasi as the “Kaba of Hindustan” and the city's ongoing influence on art and culture. Frenn’s artwork, featuring the symbolism of Gandhi Ji and Martin Luther King, encapsulated the evening’s message of hope and the collective commitment to creating a better world.

✨ The evening was a powerful reminder that creativity—whether through art, theatre, or healing—has the potential to transform society.

Open Letter to the Global Community, Human Rights Organizations, and World Leaders

Here is the illustration depicting the open letter's message, highlighting the urgent need for global action against minority oppression in South Asia.

Subject: Addressing Silence and Inaction Amidst Rising Persecution of Minorities in South Asia

Dear Global Leaders, Human Rights Advocates, and Organizations,

I, Lenin Raghuvanshi, 2007 Gwangju Human Rights Awardee and Founder-Convenor of the People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR), write to you with deep concern about the growing persecution of minorities across South Asia. This letter is both an appeal and a call to action against the silence and inaction of globally celebrated figures like Adilur Rahman Khan and Dr. Muhammad Yunus amidst this crisis.

In Bangladesh, the recent arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu, a revered Hindu monk and advocate for minority rights, under baseless charges of sedition, exemplifies the targeted oppression faced by minorities. Reports of violence against Hindus, attacks on temples, and displacement of marginalized communities have surged under the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Despite his legacy as a Nobel laureate advocating peace and justice, his silence in addressing these atrocities undermines the principles he is known for.

Equally troubling is the muted response from Adilur Rahman Khan, a distinguished human rights defender whose previous stands, including opposition to Aung San Suu Kyi's complicity in the Rohingya genocide, were widely applauded. The May 18 Memorial Foundation rightly stripped Aung San Suu Kyi of the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights, a decision I and many others supported. Today, Adilur’s reluctance to condemn the violence against minorities underlines a disturbing inconsistency in human rights advocacy.

While South Asia is witnessing intensified attacks on minorities, including India’s own descent into corporate-driven fascism, the silence of leaders with influential platforms is a profound betrayal of the values we collectively uphold.

An Urgent Call for Action

  1. Demand Accountability from Adilur Rahman Khan and Dr. Muhammad Yunus:

    • World leaders and human rights organizations must urge these figures to condemn the ongoing persecution in Bangladesh and advocate for the protection of vulnerable communities.
  2. Address the Broader Crisis in South Asia:

    • Oppression of minorities is not confined to one nation. Across the region, targeted attacks, systemic discrimination, and authoritarian regimes are threatening peace and pluralism. The global community must respond with a united front.
  3. Support Grassroots Movements and Activists:

    • Activists like Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu, who fight for justice at great personal risk, represent the true spirit of human rights. Their work must be amplified and safeguarded.
  4. Oppose Corporate Fascism and State-Backed Oppression:

    • In India, we continue to oppose corporate fascism and majoritarian policies that marginalize minorities and undermine democracy. Similar struggles are mirrored across the region. A collective global effort is essential to combat these trends.

Conclusion

The fight for human rights requires unwavering commitment, consistency, and accountability. The silence of influential figures like Adilur Rahman Khan and Dr. Muhammad Yunus weakens our collective struggle for justice. Let us remind them—and ourselves—that the integrity of human rights advocacy lies in action, not just ideals.

I urge world leaders, human rights organizations, and the global community to stand in solidarity with oppressed minorities, challenge systemic violence, and hold those in power accountable.

Let us not allow silence to be an accomplice to oppression. Together, we can ensure that justice and dignity are not mere aspirations but realities for all.

Yours in solidarity,
Lenin Raghuvanshi

๐ŸŒŸ Honored to Share My Confirmation Certificate for the Coveted REX Karmaveer Puraskaar Maharatna เคช्เคฐेเคฐเคฃा (Prerna) Award 2024! ๐ŸŒŸ

                                                                    Lenin Raghuvanshi

I am deeply honored to receive the Karmaveer Maharatna Prerna Award from iCONGO in partnership with the United Nations, an acknowledgment for those who persist in their fight for justice, equality, and transformative social change. This recognition is more than just a title; it is a symbol of the collective journey toward a more equitable world. It celebrates the tireless work of those who challenge oppression and champion the rights of the marginalized, often in the face of great adversity.

This accolade follows a previous milestone—the prestigious Maharatna Award in 2019—which affirmed my dedication to tackling deep-rooted injustices such as caste-based discrimination, hegemonic masculinity, and patriarchal norms. Receiving the Prerna Award now only strengthens my resolve to push forward with this mission.

Empowering Change through the Neo-Dalit Movement

As a part of PVCHR (People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights), my work has been centered on the Neo-Dalit movement—a modern stand against the systemic oppression of marginalized communities in India. This movement is about reclaiming dignity, asserting human rights, and empowering those who have historically been silenced. Every day, it is an honor to stand alongside the resilient individuals and communities whose courage fuels this journey toward justice.

Celebrating Champions of Change

The REX Karmaveer Global Fellowship (#RKGF) recognizes those who champion #IdeasForAction and work to #RightEveryWrong, encouraging a spirit of service through the #JoyOfGiving. Hope Amid Darkness: Confronting India’s Deep Government and Institutional Challenges

Diwali Wishes: Hope Amid Darkness

Hope Amid Darkness: Confronting India’s Deep Government and Institutional Challenges
By Lenin Raghuvanshi

This Diwali, let us remember that the light we celebrate stands as a beacon against the shadows of conspiracy, manipulation, and injustice. Though facing financial and systemic hurdles, I am inspired by the unwavering legacy of freedom fighters and martyrs who laid down their lives for justice, equality, and the hope of a brighter tomorrow.

The challenges we face, from bureaucratic obstacles to the overpowering influence of entrenched networks, remind us of the critical need for transparency, accountability, and genuine support for human rights defenders (HRDs) in India. As we work to protect HRDs and demand reform, may the spirit of Diwali inspire courage in the face of adversity and rekindle the strength to pursue justice.

May this Diwali ignite a renewed commitment to fight for integrity, fairness, and the protection of human rights across all institutions. Let's stand together, honoring the spirit of the festival – the triumph of light over darkness, of hope over despair.

Wishing everyone a meaningful and resilient Diwali, filled with the courage to pursue a just and inclusive future.

Neem as a Sacred Tree: A Reflection on Spiritualism, Ecology, and Climate Change

From rooftop to soil: A sacred Neem tree nurtured for five years, now flourishing in the Musahar community, symbolizing resilience, spirituality, and nature’s healing power.

In many cultures, the neem tree (Azadirachta indica) holds deep spiritual significance, symbolizing purity, protection, and healing. Shruti's decision to buy a neem tree for her puja (worship) as a representation of a goddess reflects this profound connection between the natural world and spirituality. For five years, the neem tree lived in a flowerpot on the roof of her home, as a cherished object of worship. However, without realizing the bonsai technique that restricts the tree’s growth, the tree faced a crisis. Recognizing this, Shruti gave the tree to Dular Musahar, a marginalized community member, who planted it in their Musahar ghetto. The tree was finally able to root and flourish in its natural environment.

This small but significant gesture offers an opportunity to reflect on our relationship with nature, particularly in the context of climate change and environmental sustainability.

Neem in Spiritualism and Ecology

In Hindu tradition, the neem tree is revered as a symbol of the divine feminine, often associated with goddesses like Durga and Parvati. Neem is considered sacred, believed to possess medicinal and purifying properties. Shruti’s act of worshipping the neem tree as a goddess highlights the cultural belief in the interconnectedness of the natural world and spirituality.

Beyond its spiritual symbolism, neem has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, pest control, and environmental restoration. Its resilience in harsh environments and ability to thrive in drought-prone areas make it an ecological boon in the fight against climate change. By planting neem trees, communities can help combat desertification, improve soil fertility, and provide natural shade and protection in increasingly warmer climates.

Bonsai and the Crisis of Containment

The art of bonsai, though beautiful, is about containment—restricting a tree’s growth for aesthetic purposes. Without understanding the specific care required for bonsai, Shruti’s neem tree struggled to survive in the confines of a flowerpot. This serves as a metaphor for the broader environmental crisis: humanity’s tendency to constrain nature for its own purposes often leads to ecological imbalances.

Just as Shruti realized that the neem tree needed to be freed from its restricted environment to thrive, we too must recognize the importance of allowing nature to flourish in its full capacity. Dular Musahar’s act of planting the tree in his community's ghetto, a place often neglected and marginalized, symbolizes the restoration of natural harmony. It emphasizes that even in the most underserved areas, nature can play a role in renewal and healing.

Neem and Climate Change

The neem tree’s ecological resilience directly links it to the fight against climate change. Capable of growing in arid, drought-stricken regions, neem is a natural ally in combating environmental degradation. It not only provides shade and improves air quality but also acts as a carbon sink, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

By planting neem trees in communities like the Musahar ghetto, where environmental and social vulnerabilities intersect, we can address both climate resilience and social equity. The Musahar community, often sidelined in discussions about environmental justice, benefits directly from the neem tree’s presence—receiving both spiritual and ecological protection.

Conclusion

Shruti’s journey with the neem tree is more than a personal story of devotion; it is a profound reflection on the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature. The transition of the tree from a roof-bound pot to the open earth of Dular Musahar’s home mirrors the broader need for humanity to reconnect with nature in the face of climate change.

In a world where the environmental crisis looms large, spiritual practices that honor and respect nature, like Shruti’s neem tree worship, offer pathways toward ecological restoration and climate resilience. As we plant more trees and allow nature to thrive, we honor not only the earth but also the spiritual and cultural traditions that see nature as a living, breathing entity—worthy of worship, protection, and care.

"Justice Shall Prevail, Not Revenge"

"Justice Shall Prevail, Not Revenge" – A tribute to Lenin Raghuvanshi, a relentless human rights activist, advocating for peace, equality, and fraternity over vengeance.

                    Justice Shall Prevail, Not Revenge

On paths of truth, you stand so tall,
Uniting broken hearts, you call.
Lenin, you fight for all to see,
Justice, not revenge, must be.

Caste and creed, you rise above,
Fighting hatred with fierce love.
Neo-Dalit voices, loud and clear,
Fraternity and peace, you hold dear.

On August Kranti's sacred day,
You led the march in your own way.
Injustice falls, as truth shall sail,
For in your heart, justice will prevail.

                               Poem by Kabeer Karunik

Statement on Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday by Lenin Raghuvanshi:

On this day, we honor Mahatma Gandhi’s life and teachings, reflecting on his relentless advocacy for non-violence and truth as pathways to justice and peace. Gandhi stood against war and oppression, and his commitment to non-violence resonates deeply in today’s world, where conflicts, such as the occupation of Palestine and the war in Ukraine, perpetuate human suffering.

Gandhi believed that no war, whether considered just or unjust, could ever bring about lasting peace. He taught us that peace and justice cannot be achieved through violence, but only through dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for the dignity of all people.
From his wisdom, we derive the importance of indigenous knowledge, critical thinking, and the courage to speak against injustice. As India, under the influence of Gandhi and Buddha, advocates for peaceful resolutions in global conflicts, we urge the world to follow this example, especially in regions like Palestine and Ukraine, where violence continues to ravage lives.
In this spirit, we stand firm in calling for the end of war, occupation, and fascism, advocating for a future where diplomacy reigns supreme and peace is sustainable. This Gandhi Jayanti, let us commit ourselves to building a world free from hatred, violence, and oppression. Only by embracing non-violence can we hope to forge a just and peaceful future for all.
