To Eat or Not to Eat: Zomato’s ‘Pure Veg’ Initiative Sparks Discussion on Caste-Based Notions of Purity

Lenin Raghuvanshi, a Varanasi-based activist working for Dalit rights, explained how meat eating became a part of the marginalized community’s social system.

“Untouchability is inherently connected with the food. Since Shudras and Dalits were not allowed to mingle with the society, they were left to fend for themselves with the leftovers. Many times, the Dalit community had the responsibility to dispose of carcasses of animals. They used to take the skin off the corpses to make materials or eat the meat, which again added to the notion of them being ‘impure’ because of that,” he explained.
He said people can have their choice; but when it comes to claiming what is ‘pure’ and the superiority attached with it, it then becomes a problem.
“If everyone had an equal footing, the issue would have been different today. Maybe the concept of ‘purity’ would noy have been associated with food,” Raghuvanshi said.
Vegetarians claim they do not eat meat, he said, asking what about the ones at positions of power who “drink the blood of their employees by exploitation”.

A Spiritual Journey: Dakshineswar to Kalighat

Under the mystical veil of Amavasya's darkness, I embarked on a sacred pilgrimage on March 10, 2024, drawn by the irresistible call of Maa Kali. With the radiant spirits of Abhimanyu and Shabana as my guides, I set forth on a path of spiritual communion, beginning at the hallowed grounds of Dakshineswar Kali Temple.

Standing before the resplendent form of Bhavatarini, the primal energy incarnate, I was overcome by a wave of emotions and spiritual enlightenment. The Dakshineswar Temple, a symbol of unwavering devotion, bore witness to the profound faith of Rani Rashmoni, whose philanthropy and devotion continue to inspire generations.

As I wandered through the temple complex, adorned with Navaratna architecture, I felt the whispers of divinity and transcendence echoing through its corridors. Amidst the rhythmic chants and the fragrance of incense, I encountered shrines dedicated to Shiva, Kali's consort, and Radha-Krishna, embodiments of divine love.

Every corner of Dakshineswar Temple resonated with history and mysticism, evoking the presence of Ramakrishna and Ma Sarada Devi, whose spiritual contemplation imbued the chambers of Nahabat with an aura of sacredness.

In this sanctuary where the earthly and divine converge, I found solace and serenity, my heart overflowing with gratitude for the opportunity to commune with the Goddess herself. As I bid farewell to Dakshineswar, the ethereal aura of Maa Kali accompanied me, illuminating my path with the light of spiritual awakening.

On March 13, I continued my spiritual odyssey to Kalighat Kali Temple, where the embrace of Maa Kali's divine energy filled me with profound spiritual emotions and enlightenment. Offering prayers and homage at this sacred shrine was a deeply moving experience, reminding me of the enduring significance of devotion and faith.

The Kalighat Kali Temple stands as a testament to centuries of reverence and devotion, its origins steeped in the legend of Sati's self-immolation and the sanctity of her divine presence. Constructed in 1809 and patronized by the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family, this sacred Hindu shrine continues to attract pilgrims from far and wide, drawn by the promise of blessings and enlightenment.

As I reflect on my spiritual journey from Dakshineswar to Kalighat, I am reminded of the profound connection between devotion and enlightenment, and the timeless significance of Maa Kali's divine grace in guiding our paths towards spiritual awakening. May her blessings continue to illuminate our souls and lead us towards eternal bliss.

Anant and Radhika: A Beacon for Responsible Capitalism and Democracy

Harmony's Embrace: A Celebration for Anant and Radhika

In Gujarat's land of grandeur and grace,
Where opulence meets with an embrace,
In the shimmering glow of Reliance's light,
A celebration unfolds, radiant and bright.

Congratulations to Mr. Anant Ambani and Ms. Radhika Merchant fair,

As they embark on a journey, a love beyond compare.

In the heart of this union, a symbol so rare,

Of spiritual depth and a soul laid bare.

Anant, the beacon of a new era's dawn,

A fusion of virtue and capital drawn.

With hopes that capitalism may steer,

Towards democracy's embrace, noble and clear.

Radhika, with grace from New York's halls,

A Bharatnatyam dancer, enchanting in her calls.

Joining hands with Anant, a tale untold,

In the saga of love, their destiny unfolds.

Amidst the luminaries, a star-studded sight,

Mark Zuckerberg, Rihanna, Gates - their presence alight.

Shah Rukh Khan and Bachchan, Bollywood's pride,

In Jamnagar's realm, where dreams coincide.

Mukesh Ambani, a titan of wealth and might,

With Reliance's empire, a beacon in the night.

Anant, the youngest, with vigor and zeal,

Guiding Reliance's course, with a vision surreal.

As festivities dance in splendor's array,

In Jamnagar's embrace, where joy holds sway.

Amidst the extravagance, a gesture so true,

Serving meals to the locals, a noble debut.

In this union of hearts, amidst jewels and gold,

Let love's pure essence forever unfold.

Congratulations, Anant and Radhika, may your love ignite,

A flame that burns eternal, in joy's resplendent light.

In democracy's realm, where freedom's song is sung,

The market thrives, where many hopes are hung.

Yet, while democracy favors the market's sway,

The market oft turns, with a different display.

Sanatani spiritualism, Mr. Anant Ambani's creed,

A beacon for capitalism, with a noble lead.

Rooted in rule of law, dignity, and just measure,

His vision shapes capitalism's righteous treasure.

For in this blend of virtue and enterprise,

Lies the hope for a democracy's rise.

Where inclusivity reigns, and justice abounds,

And the welfare of all, in prosperity, resounds.

Let us toast to this union, a beacon so bright,

May it guide us towards democracy's light.

In the spirit of love and responsible gain,

May Anant and Radhika's union forever reign.
