Yashoda Devi ji: A Tribute in Eternal Light

 In loving memory and profound reverence, on the auspicious occasion of my grandmother, Yashoda Devi ji's, Punyatithi.

My beloved Dadi, Yashoda Devi ji, departed from this world at 8:30 PM on February 11, 2018. She was the epitome of grace and strength, the beloved wife of Shri Shanti Kumar Singh, a stalwart freedom fighter and devoted Gandhian. Her life adorned 109 years of wisdom and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Dadi was not just a matriarch; she was my guiding light in understanding the essence of Sanatan religion. Even though she has transcended to the realm beyond, her spirit continues to illuminate my path and resonate within my being.

In eternal gratitude and with tears of both sorrow and joy, I offer my heartfelt homage to her noble soul. Forever cherished, forever missed.

Childhood days spent, from infancy to youth,

दादी की पून्य तिथि पर नमन यशोदा देवी पत्नी शान्ति कुमार सिह स्वतंत्रता संग्राम सेनानी का जीवन परिचय

चन्दौली जनपद के हिनौती ग्राम के मर्याद सिह की बडी बेटी यशोदा देवी थी । शान्ति कुमार सिह से शादी होने के बाद धौरहरा आ गई । घर मे वह सबसे बडी बहू थी । स्वतंत्रता संग्राम की बाते सुनकर यशोदा देवी सदैव कुछ कर गुजरने की सोचती थी । असहयोग आन्दोलन मे भाग लेने व कलेक्टर फिनले को जूता मारने पर इनके पति को सात माह की सजा हुई थी । अगस्त 1942 मे पति के फरार होने पर पति शान्ति कुमार सिह को पकडने के लिए अंग्रेजो की एक बडी पलटन धौरहरा गांव मे पहुंची, घर पर महिलाये ही रह गई थी, जो धौरहरा से भागी नही, अंग्रेजो की पलटन ने यशोदा देवी पर अनगिनत लाठिया बरसाई, लात-घूंसो से मारा पीटा, घर के खपरैल को पीट-पीटकर तहस-नहस कर दिया, खिडकी–दरवाजो को निकाला और उसमे आग लगा दी, घर मे जो भी अन्न बचा था उसमे जहर मिला दिया, बर्तन, मटके और कुंडो को कुए मे फेंक दिया जुल्म की कोई भी ऎसी डिग्री नही बची थी जिसे फिरंगियो ने यशोदा पर न आजमाया हो । यशोदा देवी को आजादी के लिए जंग लडने की प्रेरणा पति के परदादा अनमोल सिह से मिली, जब अंग्रेजो की पलटन क्रांतिकारियो को मिटाने के लिए हथियार लेकर बडी स्टीमर से गोमती नदी के रास्ते लखनऊ जा रही थी तो अनमोल सिह ने नाद नदी के मुहाने पर साथियो के साथ धावा बोलकर 40 अंग्रेज सिपाहियो व अफसरो को मारकर गोमती नदी मे दफन कर दिया था और उनके हथियार लूटकर क्रांतिकारी साथियो के हवाले कर दिया था, तब उनको 70 साथियो सहित ही गांव के ही पकडी के पेड पर सन 1857 मे फांसी पर चढा दिया गया था । यशोदा के चचिया ससुर की पत्नी रमा देवी स्वतंत्रता संग्राम मे अग्रणी थी, जिनके साथ यशोदा ने संकटो से न घबराते हुए एक बीर की तरह गांव-गांव घूमकर देशप्रेम का अलख जगाती रही, धौरहरा ही नही, बनारस भर मे स्त्रियो को चूल्हे-चौके से बाहर लाकर नये आकाश मे विस्तार की कोशिश को बल देती रही । देशवासियो को उनके कर्तव्यो के प्रति प्रेरित करती रही । क्रांतिकारियो को खाना पहुंचाना और खिचडिया बाबा के नाम से प्रसिद्ध रास बिहारी बोस को पडोस की लडकी से खिचडी भेजती थी । उनकी सक्रियता को देखते हुये घर वालो ने बढावा दिया, जिसके कारण यशोदा का घर क्रांतिकारियो का घर हो गया । यशोदा देवी के आग्रह पर ही नेता जी सुभाष चन्द्र बोस धौरहरा आये और क्रांतिकारी रास बिहारी बोस के साथ आखिरी बैठक की । देश की पहली महिला मुख्यमंत्री सुचेता कृपलानी से लेकर गाँधी जी, मोती लाल नेहरु, जवाहर लाल नेहरु तक बीरो की धरती धौरहरा मे आ चुके है । यशोदा देवी के जिद, जज़्बे और साहस को नेता जी सुभाष चन्द्र बोस तक सलाम करते थे । जिस पकडी के वृक्ष पर क्रांतिकारियो को धौरहरा मे फांसी पर चढाया गया था उस फंसिया वाली पकडी के नाम से प्रसिद्ध पकडी के वृक्ष को हर शाम दीप जलाकर यशोदा क्रांतिकारियो को याद करती थी । 11 फरवरी 2018 को 109 साल की उम्र मे यशोदा देवी के साथ एक ऎसा इतिहास मिट गया, जिसे हर देशभक्त सलाम करना चाहेगा ।

Tribute on Grandma's Death Anniversary: Introduction to the Life of Yashoda Devi, Wife of Freedom Fighter Shanti Kumar Singh

Yashoda Devi, the esteemed daughter of the Hinouti village in Chandauli district, was born into the family of Maryada Singh. After marrying Shanti Kumar Singh, she became a significant presence in her household, assuming the role of the eldest daughter-in-law. Inspired by tales of the freedom struggle, Yashoda Devi always harbored a desire to contribute. When her husband faced a seven-month sentence for participating in the Non-Cooperation Movement and assaulting a British official, her resolve only strengthened.

In August 1942, when her husband went into hiding, a large contingent of British troops arrived in Dhaurahra village to apprehend him. With only women remaining at home, who refused to flee, Yashoda Devi bore the brunt of the British onslaught. She was subjected to countless lashes, kicks, and beatings, her home ransacked, and belongings destroyed. They even poisoned whatever food remained, threw utensils, grinding stones, and pots into wells, leaving nothing untouched by their cruelty.

Yashoda Devi drew inspiration for her fight for freedom from her great-grandfather Anmol Singh, who had fought bravely against the British in 1857. Her aunt Rama Devi was also a leading figure in the freedom struggle. Undeterred by adversities, Yashoda Devi roamed from village to village like a brave warrior, kindling the flame of patriotism. Her activism extended beyond Dhaurahra to encompass the entirety of Banaras, encouraging women to step out of their domestic confines and embrace the vast sky of possibilities.

Her proactive stance garnered support from her family, transforming their home into a sanctuary for revolutionaries. Yashoda Devi's relentless efforts even attracted the attention of leaders like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who visited Dhaurahra and held crucial discussions with revolutionary Ras Bihari Bose. From the first female Chief Minister Sucheta Kriplani to Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, the soil of Dhaurahra witnessed the footprints of many luminaries.

Yashoda Devi's determination, zeal, and courage earned her accolades even from leaders like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The tree under which revolutionaries were hanged in Dhaurahra was famously adorned with a lamp every evening in remembrance of those martyrs, a tradition that Yashoda Devi diligently upheld. On February 11, 2018, at the age of 109, Yashoda Devi bid farewell, marking the end of an era that every patriot would salute.
